Guys are hopeless. Their eyes pop out at a pair of tits and a cute bum. In the 70’s the wall along Manly beach was a rating promenade. Surfers would sit along the wall on weekends and give you a 1-10 rating on how hot you were. I used to walk the back road to North Steyne to avoid this scrutinising and humiliation. I was cute and spunky but I didn’t want to be rated. They could get fucked! If you weren’t worth rating you got barked at … bastards. Have things changed today?
I wore micro bikinis. My friends and I used to make our own out of pretty batik fabric. We made long thin tubes for straps and sew the fabric around the tubes for the bra bits. The fabric was just big enough to cover our nipples. The top bits had doubled straps which pulled tight and tied at the neck. The pants were just as tiny and easy, with loops of tubing at the sides, which tied up. The loops had more coverage than the bits, they were hot!
My friend Rose was gorgeous, she was Spanish, with a tiny little figure, beautiful legs and long brown sun kissed hair which went below her bum. She helped me make my first bikini. I loved surfing with Rose; she was as into it as much as me. We wagged school together and hitched all along the Northern Beaches, surfing at our favourite spots. And every time blowing up, surfing, deflating, and then hitching as we went. We were so healthy!
We both lived in the inner west, we’d catch a ferry to start with, and then we’d hitch throughout the day, go surfing and eventually hitch our way back to Manly to catch the ferry home. Sometimes we’d do Sydney Road and get a hitch back to the city. Sydney Road was the hitching road, on a weekend you just had to look up that hill and there would be hitchhikers all the way. It was the place to get a ride back into the city. It was competitive and it was very bad hitching etiquette to steal a place in line. That’s just like dropping in!
Rose and I would always get a ride real quick, but that was the way it was. The cars that picked us probably had a rating system for hitchers too.
